Modular Origami Icosahedron

Modular Origami Icosahedron

Regular readers on this site would know that I have something for paper models. I like them, but can’t seem to make them too well. Scratch that. In fact, I totally suck at making things out of paper. Nonetheless, I still like them.

Today’s math-art was made by Dan Walsh, and you can read all about the creation process on Britta’s blog. Best thing is, she also posted up a template (pdf) which you can download and follow. The papercraft being modular, I think the tedious part would be to make and glue the 20 faces individually.

They’re beautiful things, the papercraft icosahedron. It has an organic feel to it, and not too surprising too, as there are quite a few virii (Herpes, to name one) that is in the shape of a icosahedron.

There is a lot of math going on behind an icosahedron, but ah… I’ll save it to later when I have more time.
