Post-Escher Tribute

Post-Escher Tribute

I’ve been meaning to post this for some time already. Today’s Math-art is called Escher’s Ball and Knoop with Magriite Man (Dutch: Escher bol en -Knoop met Magritte man) by Jos de Mey.

I’ve been intending to post this from December 22nd, but I didn’t. Jos de Mey passed away on December 22nd 2007, and is one of the world’s more famous post-Escher artists. His artworks are often impossible, and are a play of perspective.

Also, like M.C Escher, de May has mathematics strewn all over his art. This one for example, has a very obvious torus knot.

de May wasn’t as famous as Escher, but his art were often times more surreal. I liked his artwork, and so, I decided to say “screw you” to copyrights (I ask for permission to post pictures before posting them on this site, but if the artist is newly deceased, it’s a little iffy in the copyright area) and post this tribute to him.

To me, de May’s artworks are more subtle than Escher’s (this one I post is a notable exception). It takes some time to figure out the perspectives and math behind his (though Escher, is arguably more detailed). I also like the surreal experience that Jos de Mey’s artworks give out. Quite chilling.
