Imploding Flower

Imploding Flower

Today’s Math-Art is a parametric breather surface. These surfaces are the mathematical surface for the irregular energy buildup pattern known as breathers. As happens, it is also a a pseudosphere - a hyperbolic surface with a constant negative curvature.

This math art was created by Paul Nylander with POV-Ray.

There are two types of breather surface visualisation. Today’s math art is the parametric version. There is also the non-parametric version - which I may post some time later.

A friend of mine commented that it looked like a flower eating itself, hence the name being Imploding Flower. The shape of the pseudophere looks something like something in between an umbrella and a flower, and among the names suggested were Self-Eating Umbrella and The Subtle Flower. I like this image, because despite it being used in various complex fields like engineering, it is simplistic. It looks simple. It is elegant.

It’s art to me.
